Reference

Reference materials include encyclopedias, dictionaries, and almanacs that are used to find specific information.   Because most people consult these books briefly, but do not need to read them from beginning to end, these books can not be checked out.  The call number for reference material is preceded by the letter R.

Magazines and Newspapers

We currently have subscriptions to over 40 magazines.  These range from general to special interest.  The last few issues of all magazines are kept on shelves in the reference section of the library, while archived issues are kept in boxes on the circulation shelves.  All but the latest issue of a magazine can be checked out for a 1 week period.

We receive issues of the Morning Sentinel each week day morning, and the Register News each weekday afternoon.  Due to a shortage of space, newspapers are only kept for a few days.

Books

Books are shelved according the the Dewey Decimal Classification System.  Each book has a call number.  The top line of the call number indicates the Dewey classification.  Posters above the non-fiction section show the general Dewey categories.  The second line is the first 3 letters of the author's last name.  If there is no author, the second line is the first 3 letters of the first word of the title.  Books are shelved first by Dewey number, then by author or title.

Under Construction!!!
IPAC is an automated card catalog for the WHS Library.  This means that as sections of the collection are keyed into the catalog, students may search the WHS on-line catalog to find books in our own library.  Not all sections of the WHS Library are in the system.  This is a time consuming process, so have patience.

In addition to the reference collection, there are 3 other collections in the WHS Library.

  • Fiction
  • Non-fiction
  • Accelerated Reader

Books from any of these collection may be checked out for 2 week periods, with an additional 2 week renewal if necessary.  Books checked out for a school assignment can be kept until the assignment is due unless another student is waiting on the book.  Then the standard 2 week period goes back into affect.

WHS Library is part of the Shawnee Library System.  That means we can borrow books, pamphlets and videos from over 60 libraries in southern Illinois.  That includes public, school and community college libraries.  Here is the procedure.

  • Click on the Shawnee icon on the WHS Library page

  • Find the item you want to request

  • Print out the first page

  • Write your name on it and turn it in to Mrs. Tickner in the library.

  • No pass word needed to search

We receive deliveries from Shawnee every Wednesday.  They have to be checked in before they can be made available to the students who order them.

First Search is an online data base that allows you to find full text magazine articles.  This is a subscription service provided by the Illinois State Library.  To log on you must have the school's authorization number and pass word.  This information is posted in room 101 and it is available through Mrs. Tickner in the library.  See Mrs. Tickner to learn how to use this data base.

Another database on FirstSearch, WorldCat, is another source available to WHS students.  Through WorldCat, we can borrow books from Libraries all over the state.  See Mrs. Tickner if you need information that you have not found from another source.

Though not a true online resource, Encarta resides on the computers in the lab and the Library.  It  is an encyclopedic database that provides access to articles and related web sites, graphics, a dictionary, and atlas.
