Amendments that Overturned Supreme Court decisions

There have been four amendments to the United States Constitution that have overturned Supreme Court decisions.  They are the 11th, 14th, 16th, and 26th.  Each group will be assigned one of these amendments.  Your assignment is to go to the Wikipedia website and research the Supreme Court decision that prompted the amendment and how that amendment addressed the problem or unwanted outcome of the Court decision.  Just click on the link and type your amendment in the search box.  Read about the amendment and the Court decision that prompted the amendment. Find additional information at the 2nd site and Encarta.  Then make a PowerPoint Presentation covering the following information.

  • What is the name and date of the Supreme Court decision that led to the amendment and what was it about (background).

  • Briefly explain the case.  What were the arguments by both sides in the case?

  • What was the Supreme Court's decision?

  • When was the amendment passed?

  • Explain what the amendment says and how it addressed or fixed the problem (why was it needed or what did it do)

  • On the last slide(s) cite your sources
