Depression

As you watch the video, think about the following.  

  • What does it mean to have depression or to be depressed? 
  • What are the differences between the blues and clinical depression? 
  • Note the ways depression has been treated throughout history.
  • How have perceptions of this mental illness changed over time?

After watching the video, pick a partner to make a poster focusing on myths and reality about one of the following topics.

  • What is depression?  What are some signs or symptoms?
  • What are some different types of depression?
  • What are some causes of depression?
  • Describe different treatments of depression.
  • Teen depression
    (No more than 2 groups doing the same topic please.)

Some possible myths to include are:

  • Depression is just a feeling, you can snap out of it if you try hard enough.
  • Depression only occurs when bad things happen.
  • Its easy to make yourself feel better.
  • There is nothing you can do to treat depression.
  • Only adults suffer from depression.
  • Antidepressants can help anybody with depression.
  • There are no outward signs of depression.
  • People with depression never experience extreme highs.

Use your textbook, information from the video, books and the following web sites to find information, pictures and quotes to put on the poster.
